Virginia's Fall General Election Slate is Set
Early voting and Primary Day netted about 7.2% of the electorate to decide Democrat statewide candidates and Republican assembly contests on both sides of the aisle.
Virginia’s 2025 general election candidates are set in the off-year election after the June primary election Tuesday; absentee ballots are still being finalized this week.
In the Democrat statewide primary races, state senator Ghazala Hashmi squeaked out the nomination for lieutenant governor among a crowded field by just over 3,500 votes ahead of Levar Stoney.
Hashmi joins the top of the Democrat ticket with gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, who left her 7th congressional district seat in Congress to run for governor. Virginia House Delegate Jay Jones won the Democratic nomination for attorney general.
Like Spanberger, the Republican party’s gubernatorial nominee had no primary opponent. Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is the Republican gubernatorial nominee.
Conservative broadcaster and journalist John Reid is the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor, and current Attorney General Jason Miyares is up for reelection. As of Tuesday, those candidates are official.
About 7.2 % of the Commonwealth’s 5.8 million active registered voters turned out for the Democrat party’s statewide and local contests, and Republican assembly-seat primaries. During early voting, turnout averaged about 6%.
In the 89th District primary in the competitive tidewater region, Republican Mike Lamonea won his contest. He will face Democrat Karen Robins "Kacey" Carnegie in the general election in the fall.

EPEC Team’s analysis of the early voting data for the Democrat ballots shows 207,978 (early voting) ballots in countable state as of today. As of the Tuesday Primary, Virginia’s Department of Elections has the tally at 217,748 ballots.

For the Republican assembly seat races, the data show 15,756 Republican ballots in early countable state heading into the June 17 primary election. After Tuesday, the number of countable ballots is 16,115.
