Loudoun Holds Primary for VA-Senate 32
Republicans, Democrats hold primary on Saturday for VA Senate-32 seat after Democrat wins congressional seat. Republican John McGuire's Senate-10 seat up too after he won a U.S. House seat.
UPDATED (11/17/24): Loudoun County held a special primary election on Saturday (Nov. 16) to decide Republican and Democrat candidates to fill the seat of State Sen. Suhas Subramanyam (D-32), who won a U.S. House seat (CD-10) in the November general election.
Per LoudounNow: Republicans selected Tumay Harding as the nominee for the open seat, with 63.8% of the vote over five other candidates.
House Del. Kannan Srinivasan (D-26) will be the nominees in the upcoming special election for the 32nd District state senate seat. Srinivasan beat five other candidates for the Democratic nomination earning 2,698 votes.
It’s not the only open state Senate seat slated to be filled. State Sen. John McGuire (R-10) also is vacating his seat after winning the Congressional District 5 race.
Democrats hold a slim 21-19 majority in the state senate.
Virginia assembly Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas has not yet called an election to replace McGuire’s seat, but did call a special election for District 32 for Jan. 7 after the candidates are selected.
The “firehouse” primaries for District 32 will take place in multiple locations around Loudoun County Saturday, according to Republican and Democrat committees.
Per Loudoun Now:
Six candidates filed paperwork before last night’s deadline to be on the ballot in Saturday’s Republican firehouse primary to select the party’s nominee for the special election in the 32ndDistrict state senate seat.
The candidates are Sam Abraham, Ommair Butt, Chad Dally, Tumay Harding, Rafi Khaja, and Samuel Yan.
Loudoun County Republican information is here, rules for Saturday are here and take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Locations can be found here.
Six Democrat candidates are lined up for the special primary Saturday as well, which takes place between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Saturday at five locations, listed here.
The candidates are Hurunnessa Fariad, Ibraheem Samirah, Puja Khanna, Buta Biberaj, Kannan Srinivasan and Sree NagiReddi.
Party officials say participants have to be a registered voter and must sign a pledge to support the nominee. Virginia is a non-partisan state for registering to vote.
“Republicans are working to flip a State Senate seat red in an upcoming special election,” writes WJLA elections reporter Nick Minock, who has conducted interviews with Republican and Democrat candidates.
If “Republicans flip Senate District 32 from blue to red, Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears may in some situations be a tie-breaking vote on legislation, which would help Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin pass his legislative priorities.”
However, District 32 is considered a safe Democrat seat, just as McGuire’s District 10 is considered a safe Republican seat, which five Republican candidates have lined up to contest so far.
Virginia’s Department of Elections has full details on Early Voting here, which begins on Wed. Dec. 11, 2024 through Sat., January 4, 2025 before the Jan. 7th conclusion for Senate Seat 32. #
